Got an old car sitting in your driveway with an expired WoF, overdue Rego or no registration at all? You may not need to spend money getting it back on the road before selling it. Here’s what you need to know about selling an unwanted, damaged or non-running vehicle in New Zealand.
The short answer is yes, you can sell a car without a current Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or vehicle licence (Rego). However, the rules depend on how you’re selling the vehicle and what the buyer intends to do with it.
If your car is no longer roadworthy, has failed its WoF, or has been sitting unused for months, getting it repaired before selling may not make financial sense. A professional vehicle buyer or wrecker may be able to purchase it in its current condition and arrange collection.
At Auto Vera, we consider unwanted, damaged and non-running vehicles, including cars without a current WoF or registration. You can tell us about your vehicle and request a free, no-obligation quote before deciding what to do next.
In New Zealand, Rego and vehicle registration are not the same thing. Rego refers to the vehicle licence that allows a vehicle to be used on public roads, while registration refers to its entry on the Motor Vehicle Register. An expired Rego does not automatically mean the vehicle has been deregistered.
Can You Sell a Car Without a WoF or Rego?
Yes. A vehicle doesn’t have to be roadworthy or currently registered to be considered for sale to a buyer purchasing it for dismantling, parts or disposal. However, you must follow the applicable sale and vehicle registration requirements.
- You can enquire about selling a car with an expired WoF.
- You can enquire about selling an unregistered vehicle.
- Non-running and accident-damaged vehicles can still have value.
- Professional buyers may accept vehicles that need towing.
- Free vehicle removal may be available for eligible vehicles.
Important: Selling a vehicle without a current WoF or Rego is different from being legally allowed to drive it on public roads.
Selling a Car Without a WoF: What Are the Rules?
Under NZTA rules, a light vehicle being sold must generally have a WoF issued less than one month before the sale, unless the buyer agrees to accept it without a current WoF or with an older WoF. Heavy vehicles and vehicles requiring a Certificate of Fitness (CoF) have different requirements.
If you sell a vehicle without a current WoF, you must make sure the buyer understands that the WoF has expired. You should also obtain written confirmation that the buyer accepts the vehicle without a current WoF and won’t drive it on public roads except for permitted repair or inspection purposes.
This is particularly important when selling an old or damaged vehicle for dismantling, recycling or parts rather than normal road use.
You can read the official requirements in the NZTA guide to selling a vehicle.
Can You Sell a Car Without Registration in NZ?
Yes. You can arrange to sell an unregistered vehicle, including an unwanted car that has been sitting unused for a long time.
However, there is an important difference between selling a registered vehicle with overdue Rego and selling a vehicle that has been deregistered.
If Your Rego Has Expired
If your Rego has expired, you can still sell the vehicle. Any unpaid licensing fees may be invoiced when the vehicle is transferred or its registration is cancelled. The seller may remain responsible for fees incurred before the sale, while the buyer is responsible for licensing fees from the date they acquire the vehicle. Both parties should notify NZTA immediately when the vehicle changes hands.
If Your Vehicle Has Been Deregistered
A deregistered vehicle can still be sold. However, the buyer cannot simply become its registered person through the usual transfer process. The vehicle must go through the applicable re-registration process if it is to return to the road.
If you’re selling the vehicle to a wrecker for dismantling or disposal, discuss the deregistration and paperwork arrangements before handing it over.
For more information, see NZTA’s official selling and disposal guidance.
Can You Drive a Car Without a WoF or Rego to Sell It?
Selling doesn’t mean you can drive it.
A vehicle without a current WoF or vehicle licence (Rego) cannot be used for ordinary travel on public roads. Limited exceptions may allow you to drive directly to a place for a WoF or CoF inspection, servicing or repairs, provided the vehicle is safe to use on the road and all applicable conditions are met. These exceptions do not allow you to drive the vehicle to a buyer or use it for general travel.
If your vehicle is no longer roadworthy or doesn’t meet the requirements for road use, don’t drive it to the buyer or collection point.
Instead, ask about vehicle collection or arrange suitable transport. Auto Vera offers free car removal for eligible vehicles, including non-running and damaged cars.
What Types of Cars Can You Sell Without a WoF?
You don’t necessarily need a roadworthy vehicle to receive an offer. Depending on its condition, age and parts value, several types of unwanted vehicles may be suitable for sale.
- Old cars with expired WoF or Rego
- Non-running vehicles with engine or gearbox problems
- Accident-damaged cars
- Scrap and end-of-life vehicles
- Insurance write-offs
- Vehicles with serious mechanical problems
- Unwanted utes, vans and SUVs
- Cars that have been sitting unused for months or years
The actual offer depends on the vehicle’s condition, completeness, make, model, usable parts and current market demand.
What Paperwork Do You Need When Selling an Unregistered Car?
Having the right information ready can make selling your vehicle much easier. Before arranging collection, consider the following:
- Vehicle details: Make, model, year and number plate, if available.
- Proof of authority to sell: Make sure you’re legally entitled to sell the vehicle or have permission to act for its owner.
- Rego and registration status: Explain whether the vehicle licence is current or expired, and whether the vehicle is registered or deregistered.
- WoF status: Explain whether the WoF is current, expired or failed.
- Vehicle condition: Disclose major mechanical problems, accident damage and missing components.
- Personal belongings: Remove your belongings, documents and other personal items before collection.
Remember that the Motor Vehicle Register records the registered person, not necessarily the legal owner. Both the buyer and seller have responsibilities when a vehicle changes hands.
What Happens to the Registration When You Sell Your Car to a Wrecker?
If your vehicle has reached the end of its life or is permanently off the road, its registration must be cancelled. When selling or giving the vehicle to a wrecker, you must notify NZTA that it has been disposed of. You should also confirm whether you or the wrecker will handle the registration cancellation.
If you are unsure who will handle the cancellation, confirm this with the wrecker before handing over the vehicle. You can read NZTA’s specific guidance on selling your vehicle to a wrecker.
This is important because if you fail to notify NZTA that you’ve sold or disposed of the vehicle, you could remain associated with it and receive fees or fines relating to the vehicle.

Could Your Car Still Be Worth Money Without a WoF?
An expired WoF or Rego doesn’t automatically mean your vehicle has no value.
Even if your car no longer starts, its engine, gearbox, panels, wheels and other components may still have value. The recyclable metal can also contribute to its overall worth.
The final offer depends on several factors:
- Make, model and year
- Vehicle weight and type
- Mechanical and accident damage
- Condition of reusable components
- Whether the vehicle is complete
- Current demand for parts and scrap metal
- Location and collection requirements
